"Honesty: The best of all the lost arts." - Mark Twain
Here is the deal: I know that you want to win your Defense Base Act case.
You and your family's future depends on it. I get it. I get it because my firm handles cases just like yours on a daily basis. And the fact is this is the only thing that any two cases have in common, it's the fact that the people behind the cases want to win.
Every Defense Base Act case that comes through my door is different. There are different injuries, different family members, different futures at stake. Which means each case has to be treated from a different angle. The Turley and Mara Law Firm does this with every single DBA case that walks through our door or calls us on the phone. We treat them like they are one of our own, one of our family.
I want my family to win and get what they deserve in life. So to prepare them for the upcoming battle against the DBA insurance companies I give them two simple rules to follow: 1. Tell The Truth and 2. Get the best possible DBA Lawyer you can find.
1. Tell The Truth:
You must tell the truth about everything. And when I say everything, I mean everything. The DBA insurance companies are going to try to throw you curve ball questions or accusations so don't think for one minute, "I'm telling the truth, no problem, I've got this." If you do, you'll fall right into the DBA insurance company's trap of making you look like a liar. They know that establishing your credibility with the judge in court is going to win or lose your case. Now you know it too.
In order to be as honest as possible when it comes to your case, it's a good idea to be as prepared as your enemy. The DBA insurance company and their lawyers are going to know exactly what to expect from your case and you. They are going to know exactly what to say and how to say it. To combat this its important that you be as resourceful and educated as they are.
Start with the basics and check out The Turley and Mara website. It is considered the most digestible resource for all things DBA related. Here you can get "the meat and potatoes" of the DBA, so to speak.
Delve deeper with my book, Win Your Defense Base Act Case, for FREE. This will work as a starter guide into how to avoid the traps and tricks of the DBA insurance company and their attorneys.
There is also our podcast, DBAradio, that covers the issues that arise when dealing with DBA cases.
Have questions about the DBA benefits in general? Good. We have answers here.
2. Get the best possible DBA Lawyer you can find.
Finding the best, most experienced, DBA lawyer might not be possible in North Carolina, simply because there isn't a resident DBA specialized lawyer in Charlotte, Greensboro, Raleigh, Durham or Cary. But that's ok because the Defense Base Act is under Federal Law, not State Law. This means that you can have anyone from anywhere represent you. But that doesn't mean you should.
The Turley & Mara Law Firm is one of the best
The Turley and Mara Law Firm is one of the top two leading DBA law firms in the world. We get calls from seriously injured overseas civilian contractors all the time that have hired local attorneys. It’s usually the same type call:
- “My lawyer screwed up my case, can you fix it?”
- “My benefits got cut off and my lawyer doesn’t seem like he knows what he’s doing?”
- “My lawyer stopped taking my calls.”
- “I got referred to a local workers compensation lawyer, he said he could handle my case. Can you help me?”
Instead of giving us a call saying this kind of stuff you could just save yourself some time and heartache and hire a leading DBA attorney.
Funny thing is, my Dad lived in Moyock, North Carolina. Some of you might know who the biggest employer in Moyock is. Yes, that overseas civilian contracting company. Small world, huh?
So yah you still might want to hire someone that is based in North Carolina and I can understand that. But do you really want to hire an attorney that doesn't really understand what they're doing, doesn't answer your calls cause they don't have answers or settles your case before they had to? Or would you rather hire a heavy hitter, a lawyer that lives and breathes the Defense Base Act and knows the enemy, inside and out, that both of you are going up against?
The choice seems simple enough.
