What is a "Tort" in California?

A tort is a civil wrong which provided grounds for a civil lawsuit for compensation. By definition a tort does not arise out of a contract. Generally, there are three types of torts:

1. Intentional Torts (for example, intentionally hitting a person).
2. Negligence (breaching a duty of care)
3. Strict Liability (selling a dangerous product).

The person bringing the tort action has to prove that acts or omissions of the tortfeasor (the person committing the tort) were a cause of injury or damage to them. California tort law allows for the following damages: past and future lost wages/ profits, past and future medical bills, past and future pain and suffering, punitive damages.
