Exception 1 to California's meal period requirements: Waiver

If the employee's total hours worked for the day do not exceed 6 hours, the meal period may be waived by mutual consent of the employer and the employee. If the employee's total hours worked does not exceed 12 hours, the employee may waive the second meal period.

What this means for you is this. If you work more than 6 hours in a single day, you must have taken a full 30 minute meal period or you are owed an hours worth of wages. If you worked over 12 hours in a day, you must have taken 2 meal periods, or you are owed an hours worth of wages.
