The coefficient of friction is used to measure the slip resistance of any surface. Friction is the relationship of an object to a surface. For example, a foot to a deck. Friction, is also referred to as traction. When deck paint begins to wear-out, the coefficient of friction decreases. And the deck becomes more and more slippery.

The higher the coefficient of friction, the less is the possibility of slipping: the smaller the coefficient of friction, the greater the danger. For example, a concrete type floor surface with conventional shoes, may have a .7 coefficient of friction. Which will preclude slipping under most circumstances. A wet linoleum floor or a wet gelcoat deck which does not have a non-skid surface may have a .3 co-efficient of friction. Which is exceedingly dangerous. Of import, the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) specifies a coefficient of friction of .6 on flat surfaces and .8 on ramps.
