California NFL Workers Compensation Law

Injuries sustained by NFL football players are often permanent. Many former National Football League players experience pain, sometimes severe lifetime pain and disability. Can I bring a California Workers Compensation Claim even if I didn't play for a California NFL team?

Under California workers compensation laws, you may be entitled to California workers compensation benefits. Even if you did not play for a California team. It is often enough for you to simply play games in California. For example, Oakland, San Francisco, San Diego, etc.

Concussions in Pro Football

Concussion is a complicated injury and one that is complex in its presentation. Unlike a fracture or ligament injury, the initial evaluation is not always abnormal, and there are often no obvious findings from a physical exam.

In football, helmet to helmet contact, helmet to ground contact and helmet to pad contact all cause serious concussion injuries. Many players suffer from permanent cognitive deficits due to repeated concussions.

NFL Poster On Concussion

Beginning during the 2010 season, a poster on concussion in sports will be displayed in every NFL locker room nationwide. The poster, developed for NFL players, is the result of a joint effort between the NFL, NFL Players Association, CDC, Professional Football Athletic Trainers Society, and the NFL Physicians Society and describes the importance of recognizing a concussion, taking time to recover, and not returning to play too soon.

Former Chiefs QB Trent Green lies motionless after a tackle by Cincinnati's Robert Geathers on Sept. 10, 2006. He was carted off the field with a concussion that kept him out for eight weeks.

NFL Sideline Concussion Policy

NFL team medical personnel will use a new standardized sideline concussion assessment protocol this season. A survey was performed of team medical staff (head athletic trainers and team physicians) in November 2010 to evaluate what was currently being performed in terms of pre-season, injury, and post-injury evaluations for concussion. It was clear from this survey that most NFL teams were using a combination of symptoms, cognitive evaluations, balance testing and additional testing to evaluate concussion, but a standardized protocol did not exist.

A doctor in Pittsburgh says he has found his fourth case linking the death of a former NFL player to brain damage from his football career. Researchers without NFL ties say surveys of retired players show those who had multiple concussions are more likely to report being diagnosed with depression. Not surprisingly, the NFL disputes the validity of those findings.

Too Little Too Late

While the NFL's taking these limited steps, many view this as too little too late. Statistics show that many NFL players currently suffer from brain injuries due to suffering concussions while playing.
