The Longshore Act can be confusing. Here, we try to provide what we call, Longshore Act Straight Talk.
Temporary Disability
A disability is "temporary" if you are unable to return to work for medical reasons and you are still recuperating from your work injury. Generally, a medical doctor must certify that you are not able to work. Meaning, you need medical evidence.
If you are TTD (temporary totally disabled) then you are entitled to weekly compensation checks by your employer/ insurance company.
Permanent DIsability
A disability is "permanent" if your medical condition has become stable and is not expected to improve. A stable condition is often described as having reached the point of "maximum medical improvement," or "MMI." Some call it "Permanent and Stationary," though MMI is technically correct.
If you have a permanent disability under the Longshore Act then you are entitled to weekly disability benefits. How many weeks is determined by whether you have a Scheduled injury or an unscheduled injury under the Longshore Act.
