Defense Base Act - Brain Injuries, Brain Injured, Bomb & IED Explosions

All too many Defense Base Act employees have been killed or injured by IED's in Afghanistan and Iraq. As a corollary, blast-related traumatic brain injuries have been common in the Iraq and Afghanistan wars. A recent study funded by the Congressionally Directed Medical Research Program and the National Institutes of Health; helps understand the nature and extent of IED brain injuries. The New England Journal of Medicine published "Detection of Blast-Related Traumatic Brain Injury in U.S. Military Personnel" study recently.

The study found, abnormalities revealed on DTI were consistent with traumatic axonal injury in many of the subjects with traumatic brain injury. Neuron damage in explosion-related "mild" traumatic brain injuries can be more extensive than previously thought and is not necessarily related to the severity of clinical symptoms, researchers said.

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a serious public health problem for Defense Base Act employees Each year, traumatic brain injuries contribute to a substantial number of deaths and cases of permanent disability of DBA workers. In our practice, we have seen IED's cause many disabling brain injuries.

In the current wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, the number of blast-related traumatic brain injuries may be as high as 320,000.1 Most of these injuries are categorized as uncomplicated "mild" or "concussive" traumatic brain injury on the basis of clinical criteria and the absence of intracranial abnormalities on computed tomography (CT) or conventional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).2 However, little is known about the nature of these "mild" injuries, and the relationship between traumatic brain injury and outcomes remains controversial.
