A cave-in is a sudden collapse of the soil in a trench wall. The trench wall flows into the trench cavity. Undisturbed soil is kept in place by the horizontal and vertical forces of the adjacent soil. The soil that was removed to create a trench, is no longer available to provide lateral support for the soil left behind in the trench wall. With no support, soil from the trench wall will eventually move downward and inward into the excavation. Once it starts, a cave-in is very, very quick. The ustable soil resembles a liquid when it flows into the cavity. The soil is very heavy and can crush a person that is in the trench.
