IBU Injuries and Claims

"The only way you can walk up the gangway is to think that it won't happen to me. You almost have to think that injuries only happen to other Seaman. When you are a seriously injured Jones Act Seaman, you probably don't know what to do or where to turn. Call us before you give a statement or sign any forms." IBU Lawyer - Bill Turley

My Best Advice

If you are an injured seaman, you have rights to be protected under the Longshore Jones Act. The first thing after you are injured is that you should always tell the truth. Nothing is more important than your credibility with the judge and your lawyer. No matter what type of injury or how you were injured, you should never sugarcoat or exaggerate anything.

My Second Best Advice

The next best thing you can do before you go to court is research as much information as you can about your Jones Act Case. I have handled these types of cases since the 1980's. I have gained valuable and helpful knowledge these cases.

The Inland Boatmen's Union

The Inland Boatmen's Union of the Pacific (IBU) is one of the largest maritime Unions on the west coast of the United States of America. The IBU represents about 4,000 workers on both passenger carrying and commercial vessels that sail along the Pacific coastline.

Injuries to IBU Workers

The Jones Act and General Maritime Law protect Inland Boatmen Union members injured while employed aboard tugs, barges, and ships. Under the Jones Act/ Maritime Law injured crew members can sue their employer and the vessel they work on for negligence and/or unseaworthiness of their vessels and obtain compensation.

The Turley Law Firm is California's leading maritime personal injury firm. We have been handling Jones Act claims since the 1980's. We have a long history of representing tug, barge and ferry workers.

Why are Cabotage Laws Important?

Cabotage laws restrict coastal trade to domestic carriers and ferries, they are the only defense between U.S. citizens working aboard U.S. flagged ferries and tugs.

Cabotage refers generally to the transport of passengers and goods. Originally, it referred specifically to shipping, but cabotage also applies to airlines, trucking, and trains. Many nations have cabotage laws which dictate the terms which carriers must follow when transporting people or materials within their borders.

Shipping cabotage laws are very important. The Jones Act is the driving force behind America's Merchant Marine. The American Merchant Marine numbers in hundreds of ships and thousands of skilled sailors.

Cabotage laws ensure that the USA has a large fleet of ships when it needs it. The Merchant Marine would not be possible without the assurance of cabotage restrictions.

The Biggest Misconception Injured Seaman Have of The Legal System

There's a huge misconception about the Jones act that needs to be dispelled right now for you to understand why you'll need a lawyer to fight for your benefits if you have been injured on a vessel:

Just because you have a legitimate injury and cannot work, it does not mean that you will receive Jones Act benefits or all the Jones Act benefits which you are entitled. That's because benefits are paid by your employer's insurance company, which has an arsenal of lawyers who are paid to deny your claim.

Years of Experience on Your Side

When the other side has a lawyer, you need one, too. Too often, injured Seaman are out-lawyered by the insurance company. The Turley Law Firm attorneys go toe to toe with the big insurance company lawyers. We will do will do all we can to ensure that you collect the benefits to which you are due. The thousands of cases we have won have given us the best experience possible to handle your case in the most effective way possible.

We know the in's and out's of gathering medical evidence, filing well-documented claims, and appearing at Court. We know how to protect you from insurance company attempts to poke holes in your case, and we know how to handle all types of hearings and appeals before Judges.

Do I really need a Jones Act Lawyer?

While you aren't required to have an attorney to file for a Jones Act case, it is in your best interest to do so. If you are about to file for Jones Act benefits, if your claim has been denied, or your benefits have been reduced or terminated don't wait to call us. Please call us, so we can help you or your family member receive a just settlement for vessel injuries.
