However, according to the most recently released California boating accident statistics, on an annual basis, there are 804 boating accidents reported. Out of these California boat accidents, there were 482 injuries and 55 fatalities.

34% of the reported accidents resulted from collisions with other vessels. PWC's were involved with 25% of the accidents, even though PWC's constitute less than 10% of the vessels.

PWC's were involved in 36% of all injuries and 16% of all fatalities.

57% of PWC-related accidents and 44% of PWC -related fatalities resulted in collisions with other vessels.

Accidents involving water skiing accounted for 13% of all accidents and fatalities. Here, waterskiing encompasses all activities involving a vessel towing a person on a towline.

The majority (72%) of vessels involved in fatal accidents were less than 26 feet in length.

These statistics tell us a few things. First, boating can be very dangerous and deadly. Second, there is a disproportionate number of PWC related accidents. Usually collisions. Until the PWC manufacturers provide a way to steer PWC's off throttle - (i.e., the well known "off throttle steering loss" defect); there will continue to be so many PWC collisions. Third and finally, skiing can be very dangerous.
