“Truth is the summit of being; justice is the application of it to affairs.”

Keep One Thing in Mind
I know that winning your Defense Base Act case means a secure and hopeful future for you and your family. I know that winning your DBA case is a necessity, not an option. I know this, so I’m going to tell you the one thing that always wins in court: the truth.
The truth wins. The cold honest truth is the way you win your Defense Base Act case. Exaggerations, hyperboles and lies lose your DBA case. I hate losing. I hate losing more than I love winning. So, playing the truth is how I win the game and it’s going to be how you win too.
The DBA insurance companies want you to lose, they want to catch you in a lie or twist your words so that the Judge won’t believe you. Don’t fall for it. Lawyer up and get your details straight. The truth wins, every time.
As in battle there is nothing that can replace experience or preparation when it comes to your DBA case. You are going to need to research, study and understand the Defense Base Act, the minute details that pertain to your case and the traps placed by the DBA insurance companies that you need to avoid.
In order to do so you will need resources. I’d start with my book, Win Your Defense Base Act Case: The Ultimate Straight Talk Roadmap to the Medical Treatment and Money You and Your Family Deserve.
This “straight-to-the-point” book has helped seriously injured workers from overseas all over the world take the first steps into dealing with their DBA claim and it can help you too. Check out it’s numerous 5 star reviews on Amazon or order it here FREE. It breaks down what you need to look for in a DBA lawyer, what you need to watch out for when it comes to the DBA insurance companies and what to do to build up your case for success.
With that outline of what to do and how to do it you can ready yourself even more with The Turley and Mara Law Firm website, a comprehensive guide to all things DBA related. There’s no such thing as “too prepared”.
These preparations are just the first steps, you are going to need someone to guide and support you through this complex process. You are going to want to hire an experienced DBA lawyer, one that is an expert in this field and doesn’t guess or hesitate, to be your guide.
Think Outside Your Box
Don’t fall for the trap that so many hard-working folks fall for by getting a lawyer recommended by the DBA insurance company or a local lawyer that has no experience with the Defense Base Act.
I can’t tell you how many calls we get from panicking folks who:
- have had their benefits cut off and their lawyer is out of their depth.
- their lawyer messed up their case and they need help fixing it.
- their lawyer has stopped answering their calls.
So, here’s my second-best advice after “always tell the truth”, be careful who you pick as your representation. Make sure they’re more than good. Make sure they’re the best.
Now finding a well-seasoned DBA lawyer located in Hawaii might not be possible and that’s ok. The Defense Base Act is under federal law, which means any lawyer licensed in the U.S can represent you. So, it doesn’t matter if you’re in Honolulu, O’ahu, Kapaa, or Kihei you can and must get an informed and experienced DBA attorney.
I’m based in San Diego and that matters:
The Defense Base Act falls under the Longshore and Harbor Workers Compensation Act (LHWCA). San Diego has the biggest shipyard on the west coast and I have been representing it’s longshore men and shipyard workers for 25 years. From this experience I gained valuable experience with this act and when seriously injured civilian contractors began returning to California from overseas they came to my office for help. I then gained experienced with DBA cases before the Iraq and Afgahistan wars even began.
Now my firms is one of the top two DBA law firms in the world and we represent injured DBA workers and their families from all over the world. And I’m trying to help the ones I can’t represent, because there’s no way my firm can represent them all, by supplying the resources injured DBA workers need to win their cases.
I hate losing. I hate the idea of good people losing on what’s rightfully theirs.
A Tip for The Road
