A recent study funded by the Congressionally Directed Medical Research Program and the National Institutes of Health; helps understand the nature and extent of IED brain injuries. The New England Journal of Medicine published "Detection of Blast-Related Traumatic Brain Injury in U.S. Military Personnel" study recently.

The study found, abnormalities revealed on DTI were consistent with traumatic axonal injury in many of the subjects with traumatic brain injury. Neuron damage in explosion-related "mild" traumatic brain injuries can be more extensive than previously thought and is not necessarily related to the severity of clinical symptoms, researchers said.
